Martha Escutia is a Mexican-American lawyer and politician. She was born on December 16, 1953, in Huntington Park, California, and grew up in the working-class area of South Gate, California. She earned her Bachelor's degree from California State University, Long Beach, and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Escutia began her political career as a member of the California State Assembly, representing the 50th Assembly District from 1993 to 1998. She was then elected to the California State Senate, representing the 30th Senate District from 1998 to 2006. During her time in the Senate, she served as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and as Senate Majority Whip.
Escutia has been a strong advocate for environmental protection, healthcare reform and education reform. She also championed legislation to protect workers' rights and to combat discrimination against women and minorities.
After leaving politics in 2006, Escutia joined the law firm of The Senators (Ret.) Firm, LLP, where she currently practices law. She has also served as a professor at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles.
Escutia has received numerous awards and recognition for her work in public service and advocacy. She currently resides in Norwalk, California, and remains active in her community.
